PC giant Dell is to build a new customer care and technology support centre in Cherrywood, Co Dublin creating 420 jobs between now and 2007.

The company, which currently employs 1,230 staff in the Republic, wants to consolidate its sales and marketing operation in Bray with the existing staff at the company's campus in Cherrywood.

The transfer of staff will begin in May or June next year and will bring the total number of staff employed in the Cherrywood campus to 1,650.

Dell's general manager, Mr Tim McCarthy, said: "The decision was influenced in large part by the continued high performance of our Irish based employees and the quality of the relationship that we enjoy with the Irish Government and its agencies."

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mr Micheál Martin said "This is a significant further commitment by Dell to Ireland and involves a substantial deepening of the role the Irish operation will fulfil in Dell's highly successful European business.

Mr Martin said: "It is a major testament to the quality of Ireland's workforce As such it further highlights Ireland's ability to support knowledge-intensive, high skill business."
