Gardaí in Killarney, Co Kerry, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a young Tralee man who died in his hotel room in Killarney on Saturday morning, but do not suspect foul play.

The man, David Culloty (20), from Alderwood Road, Tralee, had attended a wedding in Killarney at another hotel.

Emergency services were called to the hotel room at 8am on Saturday, but were unable to save the man's life.

Friends who were present in the bedroom had also tried to revive him, but could not.

The area was sealed off on Saturday, and the scene preserved and examined by gardaí.

Six months ago Mr Culloty's close friend, Rowland Blennerhassett (20), died in hospital after taking cocaine at a weekend party in Tralee. He suffered cardiac arrest and renal failure.

Both men worked in the building trade, and were hard working and very close.

Mr Culloty had given the eulogy at Mr Blennerhassett's funeral, Mr Blennerhassett's uncle, former councillor Billy Leen, said yesterday.

Mr Leen said "scores and scores" of young people were at risk from the type of cocaine that was in circulation. No one knew what was in the drug, and "it was like Russian roulette".

Mr Leen said the two men were hard-working and were not habitual drug-users. The whole drugs policy needed to be reviewed.

He said the Culloty and Blennerhassett families did not want other families to have to go through what they were going through.

"This is our youth. Society is failing them," Mr Leen said.

A previous call by Mr Leen to review the drugs policy and look at ways of legalising drugs to control their ingredients was rejected by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern during a visit to Co Kerry last March, shortly after Mr Blennerhassett's death.

A postmortem on Mr Culloty was carried out at Kerry General Hospital yesterday.
