Mr Mick O'Connell, a long-serving Mayo journalist, has died at Mayo General Hospital after a brief illness

Mr Mick O'Connell, a long-serving Mayo journalist, has died at Mayo General Hospital after a brief illness. Aged 76, he began his career with the Connaught Telegraph and later joined the Western People. He was a correspondent for many years for all the national daily newspapers.

Mr O'Connell was a court reporter and also a well-known GAA writer. He was a former president of the Mayo GAA County Board and held several positions at club and divisional level. He will be buried tomorrow in his native Ballyhaunis.
