Mr Cyril Carroll, who has died in Australia, aged 96, fought in the War of Independence and the Civil War.

Mr Cyril Carroll, who has died in Australia, aged 96, fought in the War of Independence and the Civil War.

Mr Carroll, who was born in Warrenpoint, Co Down, emigrated to Australia after being interned for 11 months during 1923 in Mountjoy Prison and Gormanstown Army camp.

He joined the 2nd Battalion of the Dublin Brigade of the IRA in 1918 when he was 17 and transferred soon afterwards to the 6th Battalion. He saw action in the Bloody Sunday raids of November 21st, 1920, and the burning of the Custom House on May 25th, 1921.

At the time of the truce, he held the rank of captain. He fought on the republican side in the Civil War.

In Sydney he ran an engineering business and was elected to the city council in 1948.
