John Daly moved closer into contention for the Benson & Hedges International Open at The Belfry today.

John Daly moved closer into contention for the Benson & Hedges International Open at The Belfry today.

Daly, who won his second major title in the Open at St Andrews in 1995, resumed on two under par.

But he was only three behind overnight leader Greg Owen after rolling in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 311-yard 10th to move into a share of fifth place.

Daly appeared to have shrugged off any lingering jet-lag and the shock of being told he had suffered a mini-stroke last Saturday.

The heavy smoker was taken to hospital for tests when his left leg and left hand went numb, but they revealed he had suffered a reaction to diet pills he was taking.

Ian Woosnam resumed with three pars to stay right on Owen's heels at five under. The Welshman was in a fairway bunker at the 419-yard 11th - his second - but found the fringe of the green and saved his par.

Padraig Harrington, whose opening 71 contained 17 pars and one birdie, instantly improved to two under, pitching to four feet on the 10th. He then salvaged his par on the next after pushing his drive into the same bunker Woosnam had been in.

Nick Faldo, playing with his former Ryder Cup partner Woosnam, was still level par after three.
