Man in stable condition in hospital after Inis Mór stabbing

Two men were involved in an altercation on the island yesterday

Gardaí in Galway have spoken to two men, following yesterday's stabbing incident on the Aran island of Inis Mór.

A 47-year-old man was seriously injured in the incident on Tuesday, but his condition has improved and he is now “stable” at University Hospital, Galway.

A second man in his mid-sixties was also treated overnight for cuts and bruises.

The incident occurred near Cill Ronáín on Inis Mór shortly after 1pm yesterday, when two men became involved in an altercation on the public road.

One of the men, who is not a resident of the island, was stabbed and sustained a chest wound.

Gardaí have recovered a knife from the scene as part of their inquiries, which are being led by Supt Noel Kelly of Salthill Garda Station.

The Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter transported the two men in separate flights from Inis Mór to Galway for treatment yesterday afternoon.

Several islanders who did not wish to be named described it as “shocking” and said it was “an awful thing to happen here”.

Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran islands with a population of over 800, still has tourists at this time of year, most of whom land off the ferry in Cill Ronáin.

No arrests have been made.
