Man (20s) charged with murder of pensioner in Balbriggan

Christopher Hall was found dead in his house in north Dublin last November

A 20-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a pensioner in his north Co Dublin home last November.

Owen Maughan of Dun Saithne, Balbriggan was charged at a sitting of Balbriggan District Court on Thursday morning for the murder of 65-year-old Christopher Hall.

Mr Hall, a father of two adult daughters, was found dead in a downstairs room of his house at Dun Saithne Green in Balbriggan just after lunchtime on Wednesday, November 24th.

He had significant upper body and head injuries and was discovered when his daughter went to check on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí arrested Mr Maughan in connection with the murder on Monday, under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

At 10.48am on Thursday, Detective Sergeant Eoin McDonnell charged Mr Maughan with Mr Hall’s murder. He said Mr Maughan made no reply when charged.

Defence solicitor Fiona D’Arcy said no application for bail could be made at this stage because the charge is murder, and such an application must be made through the High Court.

She requested that Mr Maughan be granted legal aid.

Judge Deirdre Gearty remanded Mr Maughan in custody in Cloverhill prison. He will appear before the courts again on Wednesday, May 24th, via video link.
