Gardaí seek information about 2008 Gavin McCarthy murder

21-year-old shot in the face while standing outside Dublin takeaway with friends

Gardaí have renewed an appeal for information about the murder of Gavin McCarthy in Dublin’s north inner city seven years ago.

Mr McCarthy (21) was standing outside a fast food restaurant on Lower Sheriff Street with friends at about 9pm on Sunday October 19th 2008 when they were approached by a man on a bicycle. The man produced a handgun and shot Mr McCarthy in the face from close range.

The shooter fled the scene, running down a lane between Sheriff YC Football Club and an adjacent all-weather pitch before turning onto the North Wall in the direction of the IFSC, gardí said.

No-one has ever been convicted in relation to the murder.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was not in a position to offer information at the time “due to relationships and associations they had seven years ago” to come forward.

“Investigating gardaí believe that persons, living within the North Wall community and in possession of specific information in relation to this murder, are in a position to progress enquires and are appealing directly to them to come forward,” the Garda press office said.

“In particular we would appeal to those who weren’t in a position to give information at the time, due to relationships and associations they had seven years ago, but who may now feel more at ease in coming forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Street Garda station on (01) 666 8000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
