A man has been found dead at his home in Co Laois.

It is understood the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) attended the address at Wolfhill at approximately 3pm, following reports of a firearm having been discharged.

When gardaí arrived at the scene the man, aged in his 40s, remained inside the house alone for a period of between four and five hours. No other person is being sought in relation to his death.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, following a brief media blackout on the incident, gardaí said they were now investigating “all the circumstances surrounding the death”.

They are awaiting the results of the post mortem to determine the course of their investigation. Nobody else was physically injured during the incident.

Due to the nature of events, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) has been notified of the investigation in line with standard procedure. The office of the State Pathologist has also been notified.
