Gardaí investigate alleged sexual assaults on teenage girls in Sligo

Several scenes sealed off and extensive appeal for information issued

Gardaí are investigating a number of alleged sexual assaults on teenage girls outside Sligo Town on Saturday night.

A number of scenes have been sealed off as part of the criminal investigation.

Detectives believe the chief suspect may have left Sligo after the alleged attacks but have already taken complaints from the teenagers and undertaken forensic examinations of several scenes.

A section of the GAA grounds at Maugheraboy remained sealed off on Sunday while a house less than 1km away was also sealed off as a potential crime scene. Gardaí are appealing for information from people who were in the areas where the assaults are alleged to have taken place and where other scenes of interest are located.

Garda Headquarters said detectives in Sligo wanted to speak to anyone who “noticed any activity which caught their attention” between 8pm and 10pm in Ballydoogan, Oakfield and Maugheraboy.

They stressed that even if people in those areas did not believe what they saw was relevant to the investigation, they should still come forward.

Gardaí have also appealed to any road users, especially those who were recording dash cam footage, to contact the investigation team and make their footage available. Another part of what was a detailed and extensive appeal for information was addressed to taxi drivers who may have taken a fare from Sligo to Manorhamilton in Co Leitrim, a journey of almost 25km.

Anyone with information can contact Sligo Garda station on (071) 915700 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
