A sailor is recovering in hospital after he was airlifted from a fishing vessel more than 250km off the southwest coast early yesterday.
The alarm was raised late on Wednesday night when the Spanish fishing vessel Albelo Primero was about 150 nautical miles (277km) southwest of Bere Island in Co Cork.
The skipper contacted the Irish Coast Guard Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Valentia Island in Co Kerry, reporting that a 33-year-old crewman had fallen ill and required immediate medical evacuation.
Shortly after 3am the crewman was airlifted and flown to Cork airport from where he was transported by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. The man’s condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
