Dale Cregan, who walked into a police station after the deaths of two police officers in Manchester, was last night charged with their murders.

The 29-year-old was also accused of killing father and son David and Mark Short in separate incidents earlier this year. In addition, the suspect faces four charges of attempted murder. The deaths of police officers Nicola Hughes (23) and Fiona Bone (32) during a bogus burglary call in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, on Tuesday has elicited an outpouring of sympathy across Britain.

In a separate incident a man was arrested after a Facebook page was set up lauding the suspected police killer as a “legend”.

The “tribute” went online within hours of the killing of the two police officers in a gun and grenade attack. – (PA)
