A TEENAGER accused of hijacking a doctor’s car and driving over one of his legs was remanded in custody by the Dublin Children’s Court yesterday.

The doctor was left with a broken leg and unable to perform surgery following the incident in which he was allegedly dragged from his car after he had made a wrong turn.

The boy, who is aged 16, is charged with seizing the car at Sheriff Street, Dublin, and assault causing harm on April 27th, 2008. In July he had been granted bail conditions which gardaí said yesterday were repeatedly broken.

He had been ordered to obey a 6pm to 8am curfew, to reside at his home address and to remain away from the Sheriff Street, Commons Street, Oriel Street and East Wall areas.

Judge Bryan Smyth yesterday heard evidence from three gardaí who said they witnessed the teenager in breach of his curfew conditions. Defence solicitor John Quinn said his client accepted some of the Garda evidence that he had not kept his bail terms.

Judge Smyth remanded the boy, who was accompanied by his mother, in custody to St Patrick’s Institution to appear again on Thursday, when he is to be served with the book of evidence. Earlier it had been held that the case was too serious for the Children’s Court and should be sent forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Det Garda Paul Carney had told the court on July 20th last that the doctor had been making his way from the Mater hospital to the IFSC area when he made a wrong turn on to Sheriff Street.

“He did a U-turn and was set on by three youths, the accused being one of them. They threw a bicycle in front of the car to obstruct it. He was dragged out of the car, the accused got in and drove over the injured party’s leg, breaking it.”
