Couple remanded on baby-assault charges

A couple accused of assaulting their two-month-old son have been remanded in custody.

A couple accused of assaulting their two-month-old son have been remanded in custody.

The medical student and his wife appeared before Judge William Scally at the Dublin District Court this morning.

Their baby was allegedly attacked on November 20th, 2002, and suffered brain damage.

The father is charged with assault, causing serious harm, to his son under Section 4 of the fatal Offences Act 1997.  He and his wife are also charged with child neglect under the Children's Act 2001.

The couple were each granted bail of €15,000 in the High Court but were returned to Cloverhill prison in Dublin where they will remain until it is paid.

They have been ordered to remain in Lucan and report regularly to gardaí once their bail comes into effect.

Their case will now be heard in Kilmainham District Court at 10.30 a.m. on September 16th.

Judge Scally ordered no photographs be taken of the couple when they left court.
