DÚN LAOGHAIRE Rathdown County Council’s decision not to reapply for a blue flag for Seapoint in Monkstown and not to consult elected representatives has been deplored by local councillors.

Cllr Mary Mitchell O’Connor of Fine Gael said she and other elected representatives only heard about the council’s decision after the international jury had met to consider applications.

“I find it incredible that the council would make such a decision without consulting the elected members and then proceed with the decision without even informing them. This shows scant regard for the role of councillors.

“It is extremely concerning that the council felt that water quality is such at Seapoint that there was no point in even making an application. I suspect the council feared being marked down on specific items and the negative exposure this would bring. But losing on a prestigious, internationally recognised blue flag is hugely damaging for the entire area.

“The lack of transparency evident in this matter is not acceptable.’’

Her view was shared by Councillor Jane Dillon Byrne of Lab our, who said the decision not to apply for the blue flag status had been taken by the manager of the council and the members were not aware of this.

She agreed with Ms O’ Connor that the council’s concerns about Seapoint should have been brought to the attention of councillors immediately and the options could have been fully and frankly explored.
