The search for a Scottish tourist missing in the sea off the coast of Co Cork has continues this evening.

The man, understood to be 19, who was on a weekend visit to Baltimore, had been taking photographs under the cliffs near a place known locally as Spainwith a friend yesterday morning when they were hit by a wave and washed out to sea.

The second man managed to return to shore and raised the alarm at a nearby house.

Baltimore lifeboat was alerted at 8.01am and proceeded to the area where the man was last seen.

A Coast Guard helicopter joined in the rescue and was joined by the Navy vessel the LE Roisin, which took over command of the search.

The search resumed today at 8.00am.

The LE Roisin, the Toe Head Coast Guard, the Baltimore lifeboat and the Waterford and the Shannon-based helicopter took part in today's search, which was co-ordinated by Valentia Coast Guard.

A Baltimore lifeboat spokeswoman said the weather was good over the weekend but the search operation was hazardous because it involved getting close into shore under steep cliffs.

The Baltimore lifeboat was stood down this afternoon, leaving the  Navy and Garda divers at the scene.
