Fine Gael has accused the Conference of Religious in Ireland (CORI) of "dragging its feet" over moves to establish a compensation fund for sexual abuse victims.

It remains unclear how much religious orders will contribute to the fund, to be provided for in the Residential Institutions Redress Bill which enters committee stage in the Dβil today.

Accusing the orders of "prevaricating", Fine Gael's education spokesman Mr Michael Creed said abusers must be called to account and forced to make financial restitution for their crimes.

He added: "Victims are also entitled to know the levels of compensation proposed under the legislation by the Government. To proceed with committee stage without clarity on both of these issues is a further abuse of victims."
