“KNIVES ARE carried too easily, they are nearly like a fashion accessory,” warned a councillor in Dundalk town yesterday after three people were hospitalised with stab wounds following overnight incidents.
In the most serious incident, a 32-year-old man received what were at one point life-threatening injuries. Last night he remained in a critical condition in hospital while a 20-year-old man, who gardaí believe went to his assistance, was said to have a far less serious single stab injury.
A 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda station to be questioned about the knife attack.
It happened in a house in Mullaharlin Park, Dundalk, which is close to Dundalk Institute of Technology.
Town councillor Kevin Meenan yesterday said “the people of the town are in shock at these events. There is no known feud behind this and people are disgusted that Dundalk is in the news again for all the wrong reasons.”
He said some people are “afraid to go out socialising in case they meet someone carrying a knife. Knives are carried too easily. They are nearly like a fashion accessory.”
The stabbing in Mullaharlin took place at about 3.30am – about two hours after a stabbing in a house in another estate in the town. In the earlier incident, at 12.20am, gardaí were called to the Lios Dubh estate and in a house there they found a 17-year-old youth with stab wounds.
