A Co Antrim man was charged today with the brutal murder of a man walking home late at night in Limavady last week.

The 29-year-old from Portrush is due to appear before a special sitting in Derry Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with murdering Michael Martin McGinnis (38).

Mr McGinnis was minutes from his home at Shanreagh Park when he was attacked suffering severe head injuries and rib fractures which are believed to have pierced his heart.

His body was discovered a the bottom of a flight of steps at Blackburn Park at 2am last Friday some time after he rang his mother to say he was walking home.

He had last been seen around midnight in the area and police studied CCTV footage as part of their murder investigation. Detective Chief Inspector Robbie Paul, who led the murder hunt, revealed on Monday that Mr McGinnis had suffered a number of minor assaults in the past.
