AN “UNPRECEDENTED spate of killings and murders” has left Dublin reminiscent of “Al Capone days in Chicago”, according to deputy leader of the Labour Party Joan Burton. She told the Dáil that people living in the west and north of the capital felt helpless in the face of violent crimes.

“There is an unprecedented spate of killings and murders going on in Dublin and on the fringes of the west and the northside of Dublin, which is resulting in a huge loss of human life.

“People are being gunned down in ways that are reminiscent of Al Capone days in Chicago.”

Ms Burton called for Dáil time to debate the Government’s response to organised crime. “I want to know if the Government will provide time for a debate in relation to the spree of lawlessness and killing and crime that is absolutely blighting whole areas of our major cities and towns. The public living in all of these areas, including in my own constituency, feel utterly helpless.”
