MOSCOW - Prospects for peace in Chechnya faded further yesterday as talks between Russian and Chechen commanders were cancelled amid fierce clashes in the breakaway republic. Fighting raged around the village of Bamut, prompting Chechen separatist chief of staff, Gen Aslan Maskhadov, to cancel a scheduled meeting with the Russian commander of the Northern Caucasus region.
