Three mid-west chambers of commerce have made a joint call to the Government to speed up the separation of Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

Last June, Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar confirmed the make-up of a task force and two steering groups which will oversee the separation of the airports.

The Minister confirmed at the time he expected firm recommendations to be made by the groups by the end of this year.

However, in a joint statement issued yesterday, the presidents of Ennis, Limerick and Shannon chambers called for more immediate action, including an early separation date and the appointment of a new Shannon Airport board.

The statement described the move as a “critical and urgent first step in the re-establishment of Shannon Airport as an economic driver of the mid-west region”.

Ennis chamber president Brian O’Neill and his Shannon and Limerick counterparts Damian Gleeson and Gordon Kearney have also called for a commitment to provide funding for the airport to cover initial post-separation costs.
