The Institute of Directors in Ireland (IoD) has announced the establishment of Ireland’s first Centre of Corporate Governance which will be run in conjunction with the Smurfit School of Business in UCD.

Officially launched this morning by the Tanaiste, Ms Mary Harney, the centre will offer courses for company directors in corporate affairs as well as providing a research hub in all aspects of corporate governance.

Speaking at the launch of the centre, Ms Gillian Bowler, president of the IoD said the establishment was particularly timely following the Government’s appointment of a Director of Corporate Enforcement.

"Taking on a directorship these days is no light thing," Ms Bowler said.

"To prepare directors to discharge these responsibilities, specialised training is required to enhance the skills . . .that he or she already brings to the board."

A management committee, which includes IoD members and representatives of the Smurfit Business School, will run the centre which will offer its first courses later this month.
