Sweden's World Cup captain Johann Mjallby was among three Celtic footballers arrested late last night for allegedly stealing a photographer's camera it was reported by the BBC.

Mjallby, 31, Belgian international Joos Valgaeran, 26, and Dutch winger Bobby Petta, 28, spent last night in police custody following a disturbance at a Christmas party in Gateshead in the north east of England.

Reporters and photographers had been waiting outside a bar where the Scottish champions were partying and one of their number, a Daily Record photographer, had his camera allegedly stolen when the players left the bar and headed to another club.

Several Celtic players were arrested for questioning but only three remain in custody - former Northern Ireland international Neil Lennon was released after being held for breach of the peace.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "The players were with the group from the club who were in the bar, as were a number of photographers.

"There was an incident of some sort. The players left the premises, then one of the photographers reported the theft of his camera to police.

"After investigations on the quayside of the river, a number of Celtic players were arrested for questioning and three remain in custody and will be questioned later."

A Celtic spokeswoman refused to confirm which players were involved, saying the club was still investigating the matter.

Police also said the camera had since been returned to its owner. AFP
