Brittany Ferries would consider introducing a car-ferry service between Dublin and France if the peace process were restored in Northern Ireland, David Langden, the company's marketing director, said yesterday.

Brittany Ferries currently operates a service between Cork and the Breton port of Roscoff. Dublin has never had a direct passenger service by sea to continental Europe.

Brittany Ferries is reducing its services out of Cork from three sailings a week to one and will no longer serve the port of St Malo. Mr Langden, speaking at a press launch of Brittany Ferries' 1997 brochure, said this was a temporary measure and there were no implications for Brittany Ferries staff

He said the market to France from Ireland fell by 9 per cent last year but the outlook for 1997 was very positive.
