A Canadian student has been sent forward for trial accused of attacking a French doctor, who suffered a serious head injury during an incident in Temple Bar, Dublin, last August.

Simon Mercier (24), who studies in Quebec, is accused of assault causing harm to Dr Guillaume Osterstock (26) in Temple Bar in the early hours of August 14th last.

Dr Osterstock sustained a serious head injury. After the alleged incident he was treated at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, where he worked as a locum doctor. In September the High Court agreed to let Mr Mercier return to Canada on bail to continue his studies.

He is on bail in his own bond of €50,000 and has been ordered to reside with his mother at Des Compagnons Avenue, Quebec, and notify the prosecution of any proposed change of address.
