Easter eggs produced by chocolate giant Cadbury were today being withdrawn from sale in Ireland because they have not been labelled as dangerous to people with a nut allergy.
Cadbury Ireland said they were recalling a selection of its Easter egg due to the absence of a nut allergy declaration on the packaging.
People who suffer from nut allergies were advised not to eat any eggs which had been bought. A company spokesman said it involved selected Easter eggs, Cadbury Easter Chick Novelty Eggs and Cadbury Creme Egg Mini Bag.
Regular sized creme eggs produced by Cadbury are not affected. It is understood many thousands of eggs are involved in the withdrawal.
The company insisted the products did not contain nuts, but had been made on a production line that on occasions made products containing nuts and as a precaution they advised nut allergy suffers not to consume them.
It said the products were perfectly safe for those without a nut allergy and all other Cadbury products were unaffected.
The spokesman said: "Cadbury would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, however you will understand that the well-being of our customers is our priority.
"Customers are asked to please return the products to Cadbury Ireland Ltd, Coolock, Dublin 5 for a full refund or ring our helpline number on 1-800 678708."
