British Telecom says it will shut down 67 of 98 call centres over the next four years, with 2,200 jobs set to be eliminated in half that time.

The move is part of a previously announced effort by BT Retail to save £650 million sterling in costs over three years. BT will spend £100 million to modernise its remaining network of call centres.

There would be no compulsory redundancies in the plan. BT had announced in February that 1,000 positions would be lost in the first year as part of the new call centre strategy.

BT said 53 call centres would be closed down in the first two years, with eight sites going in the following two years and a further six sites set to be used for other functions. Six of its 104 call centres had already been closed.
