The brother of a Scottish toolmaker killed in an accident in a Mullingar engineering works has said that he had to come to Ireland 19 times to attend court cases relating to the tragedy.

David Knight, a brother of John Knight, who died in Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital in March 2006, following an accident at Technical Engineering and Tooling Services, was speaking after the company was fined €50,000 and prosecution costs by Judge Anthony Kennedy at Mullingar Circuit Court. One-year prison sentences were also imposed on each of three directors, but were suspended.

Mr Knight, who travelled from Dunfermline in Scotland, welcomed the judge’s comments about the company’s behaviour. He said safety standards were “Victorian”. “You shouldn’t go to your work and fail to come home,” he added.
