Firefighters, security guards and other workers at seven British airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, are to stage six one-day strikes in a dispute over pay.

The Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) said its members will walk out on November 28th, December 2nd, 10th, 15th and 23rd and January 2nd.

The BAA airports - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh - will not be able to operate on strike days, said the TGWU's national officer Tim Lyle.

Mr Lyle said he hoped the strikes could be averted, and maintained that BAA could afford to increase its offer after making big profits this year.

Workers felt frustrated at the offer, given their increased workloads and responsibilities following the September 11th outrage, he added.

BAA said it was disappointed that the TGWU had called strike dates and announced it was seeking the help of the conciliation service Acas to try to settle the dispute.

Group service director Mr Tony Ward said: "Our terms of employment are highly competitive and our pay offer is well above the rate of inflation.

"It is better than an offer the union representatives originally recommended to their members.

"In the interests of maintaining the public service our airports provide, we will be pressing for the involvement of Acas to bring this matter to an early conclusion.

"We will now develop specific contingency plans and will keep national government fully informed."
