London - Britain rejected calls by the parents of murdered eight-year-old, Sarah Payne, for a US-style sex offenders' list, saying exposure could drive paedophiles underground.

Sara and Michael Payne met the Home Secretary, Mr David Blunkett, to push for a "Sarah's Law". Such a law would mimic "Megan's Law" in the US, where communities must be notified when sex offenders move in and where lists of sex offenders are open to the public.

"One of the things we do not believe is that Sarah's Law would actually work," a Home Office spokesman said. "There is a view that it would be of detriment because it would drive paedophiles underground and encourage vigilante action."
