At least 13 people were killed, six of them police officers, in a pile-up of 20 vehicles on a fog-laden Brazilian highway at dawn today, police said.
The accident occurred near the city of Sorocaba, 60 miles (100 km) west of Sao Paulo, on one of the main highways linking Brazil's largest city to the rural interior.
Twelve trucks and eight cars, including a police car, were involved in the pile-up, which police tentatively blamed on poor visibility caused by fog and smoke from a car on fire.
The six police officers killed in the incident all were riding in the police car that crashed, authorities said. Seven other people were killed in the pile-up, they said. Police did not know how many people were injured.
