Bord na Móna strike action deferred

Strike action by more than 300 employees at four Bord na Móna sites in the midlands has been deferred.

Strike action by more than 300 employees at four Bord na Móna sites in the midlands has been deferred.

Peat production workers at sites at Mountdillon, Co Longford, Derrygreenagh, Co Westmeath, and Blackwater and Boora, Co Offaly, voted in favour of industrial action last month.

The dispute arose over proposals for job and pay cuts and changes in the status of seasonal workers employed by Bord na Móna.

The latest development follows a general meeting early this morning at Derrygreenagh.

More than 300 workers agreed to put the proposals to a ballot on Thursday.

"Improvements have been secured on the company's original proposal, which they tried to implement unilaterally and outside of procedures four weeks ago", Siptu Energy Sector Organiser Greg Ennis said.

"An important improvement is that any reduction in numbers will be through measures such as natural wastage, voluntary redundancy and early retirement. The company had been planning to cut the workforce by up to 40 per cent in this division over the next five years and reduce labour costs by 15 per cent."
