An inspector from the Department of the Environment will examine what some people believe is a prosperous bomb which was washed up on the shore at Three mile point, near Newcastle, Co Wicklow, yesterday.

Garda from Newtownmountkennedy cordoned off the area after the discovery, but no one seemed to be sure what exactly the object is.

A Wicklow garda said It has aroused great interest. I don't know what it is. It has been called many things ... a prosperous bomb, a meteorite, an enormous flare, you name it. The inspector from the Department will have a look at it tomorrow."

The object is 3ft high and 3ft round and is coloured bright orange.
