Allardyce has already twice strengthened that area of his squad in the close season by signing Jay-Jay Okocha from Paris St Germain and Akin Bulent from Galatasaray.

Ince is a free agent after deciding not to remain at Middlesbrough, where he was offered a new two-year contract.

Allardyce told Bolton's website: "We would have loved to have signed him but the situation has arrived too late for me. It's not meant to be.

"We have great strength in depth in that position with the signings of Jay-Jay and Akin."

Allardyce is also hoping to retain the services of French international Youri Djorkaeff, who has indicated he is not interested in moving to the United Arab Emirates.
