The man (20) got into difficulty when out swimming with friends on Pallas Lake, 10 miles from Tullamore. The Garda Sub Aqua Club and local divers recovered his body shortly before 10pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, two people were rescued off the Waterford coast yesterday after they encountered difficulties while out kayakking.

A lifeboat crew from Tramore rescued the two men at about 6pm after a member of the public made an emergency call. A coast guard helicopter based in Waterford assisted in the operation.

A third member of the group managed to get to shore safely during the incident at Tramore Bay.

In Dublin, the coast guard responded to an emergency call yesterday evening from a Dart passenger who spotted a group of men on a power boat in waters around Blackrock.

The men were waving their lifejackets in an attempt to attract attention, after their boat's motor broke down.

The Dún Laoghaire lifeboat towed the boat and its occupants ashore at about 5.30pm.

Elsewhere, a man operating a large sailing vessel was also rescued yesterday evening by lifeboat crew from Dún Laoghaire after a fire developed on board due to an electrical fault.
