The leader of the ultra right-wing British National Party was expected to arrive in Scotland today to launch a campaign against refugees there.

Mr Nick Griffin will visit a number of areas in Glasgow where he will deliver leaflets in a bid to recruit new party members, according to the Sunday Heraldnewspaper.

He is also expected to visit Sighthill where over 1000 asylum seekers have been housed by Glasgow City Council and which has been the scene for over 70 racist attacks in the last 13 months.

He is expected to launch a "Save Our Sighthill" campaign to try and get local residents to turn their backs on the refugees living there.

Mr Griffin is believed to be planning to hand out paraphernalia relating to alleged "black on white" attacks that have taken place across the city, the paper says.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been made aware that the BNP leader would be arriving in the city.

He said: "We have learned about the visit and the event will be given an appropriate police response." The spokesman refused to say how many officers would be involved in the operation to police the BNP visit.

Anti-racism campaigner Mr Aamer Anwar attacked the BNP's decision to head north of the border. He said: "These people are not welcome here. Freedom of speech in this case could come at the cost of more racial attacks."
