London - A pilot scheme in Britain allowing blind people to serve as magistrates is to become permanent, the Lord Chancellor announced yesterday. Nine blind magistrates who pioneered the scheme were praised yesterday. "They have demonstrated that it is the abilities of magistrates that count, and their disability need not stand in the way of serving the community in the important judicial role of the magistrate," said the Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine of Lairg.
