A constitutional challenge to a law allowing the State to buy land on the Great Blasket Island, Co Kerry, for a national historic park is being taken by owners of land on the island and will be heard on November 19th, the High Court ruled yesterday.

The case is being taken by An Blascaod Mor Teoranta, Blasket Islands, Co Kerry. Others taking the action are Mr Peter Callery, Dingle, Co Kerry Mr James Callery, Elfin, Co Roscommon; and Ms Fay Brooks, a US citizen, with an address care of solicitors in Listowel, Co Kerry.

The action is being taken against the Commissioners of Public Works in Ireland, the Minister for the Gaeltacht and the Attorney General.

The owners are seeking declarations that the An Blascaod Mor National Historic Park Act 1989 which allows for the establishment and maintenance of a national historic park on the Great Blasket Island, is invalid under the Constitution.
