The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, and Mexican President Mr Vicente Fox yesterday expressed their commitment to global free trade.

Following talks in Mexico City, the two leaders also reiterated their commitment to the Kyoto agreement and to strengthening democracy.

"We strongly support the launch of a broad-based new round of global trade negotiations this year," they said in a joint statement.

"Our goal is truly open markets that benefit all countries, no matter their size or level of development. We recognise the particular dangers posed to the planet by climate change and reaffirm our commitment to the Kyoto Protocol and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change," the statement said.

Mr Fox and Mr Blair also said they would consult each other on ways to reform the United Nations, to make it more efficient and responsive to world needs.
