Karachi - The jailed husband of the former Pakistani prime minister, Ms Benazir Bhutto, Mr Asif Ali Zardari, did not try to commit suicide but was tortured, his sisters claimed yesterday.
They rejected a police report that he tried to kill himself while in custody.
"They have tortured him and tried to kill him," Ms Fauzia Zardari said after police said her brother slashed his neck with a broken glass in a suicide attempt during interrogation.
The other sister, Ms Farryal Talpur, also termed the police report "a pack of lies." She said: "He has been physically tortured to sign a confessional statement."
