Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta said today Manchester United have given him "first option" on signing David Beckham.
Laporta, who has edged ahead in the presidential contest, said he is unconcerned by the threat of Real Madrid in the race for the England star's signature.
But the feeling in Barcelona is that Beckham will instead be lured to rivals Real as they can offer Champions League football next season.
Laporta, however, remains confident that if elected he will get his man. 2I am calm knowing that I have done things correctly as laid out in FIFA directives, the agreement is ours and if Madrid want Beckham then they will have to pass by us," he said.
"We have a lot of possibilities - despite what has been said by his representatives which is fine as they are looking for the best for the player".
He added: "Here Beckham would not have to fight to take the free-kicks and his family would live very well; we have to try to get this player at Barca next season".
