Israeli Prime Minister Mr Ehud Barak said after his electoral defeat today he would quit as Labour Party leader and leave parliament once Mr Ariel Sharon forms a new government.

"It is my intention, after the new government is formed, to leave parliament and my role as head of the Labour Party", Mr Barak said in a concession speech.
