Gardaí are trying to establish the motive for a gun attack in which a man was wounded in the legs when he opened the door of his home to a caller.

The injured man is a bank worker who is not known to gardaí. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The 32-year-old victim was at home with his partner and 10-year-old son on Tuesday night at Corbally Green, Citywest, Dublin, when a caller knocked on the front door at about 10.30pm. When the man opened the door, a gunman carrying a 9mm handgun opened fire from the end of the short driveway, firing a number of shots that wounded the victim in the legs and sprayed the front door.

The gunman, who was wearing a scarf over his face, then ran from the scene and into a car driven by an accomplice. A stolen 2005 Volvo was found burned out in the Carrigmore Estate in nearby Saggart not far from the crime scene and it was being examined yesterday.

The victim was taken to Tallaght hospital, where he was being treated last night.

Gardaí have not ruled out the possibility that he was shot in a case of mistaken identity.
