Four people have been killed on the roads this weekend

Gardaí in Tuam are investigating a fatal road crash in which one man was killed.

The victim is understood to be the son of former Fianna Fáil MEP, TD and senator Mark Killilea.

29-year-old Mark Killilea junior is believed to have been killed instantly in the single vehicle incident at Lissyconnor, on the R362 road between Dunmore and Glanamaddy, Co Galway.

The incident was discovered at about 6.20am, when a passing motorist reported to gardaí that a car had left the road and hit a fence on the R362 at Lissyconnor.

Mr Killilea, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to Roscommon County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The road is closed at present pending forensic investigation.

The latest fatality brings to four the number of people who have died on Irish roads over the bank holiday weekend.

Two men, aged 19 and 21, were killed yesterday morning when the car in which they were travelling hit a wall at Newtowncunningham on the main Letterkenny to Derry road in Co Donegal.

On Saturday, a man in his late 20s died in a motorcycle crash at De Selby Estate in Tallaght at about 3am.
