A Ballymun residents group has welcomed the settlement of a case taken by 10 residents to recover legal costs from Dublin Corporation.

In a High Court settlement on Tuesday Dublin Corporation agreed to pay 80 per cent of the legal costs they incurred in an effort to have the lift service in the tower blocks where they lived repaired.

Many of the residents did not have the use of their lifts for much of the summer of 1998, during a strike by the private company which maintains the lifts for the corporation.

Mr Sean O Cionnaith of the Ballymun Better Lifts Campaign said the settlement was "a victory for the residents of the Ballymun to prove that the Housing Act works for us and gives us the rights we're entitled to".

O Cionnaith He said the residents' aim had not been to get compensation, but to recoup the costs of previous High Court and Supreme Court actions connected with the dispute.
