The State objected to bail when a Limerick man charged in connection with the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of £1.8 million was further remanded in custody for a week.

Mr Patrick Scanlan (39), of Loughill West, Foynes, Co Limerick, was before Limerick District Court yesterday, charged with having cannabis resin for sale or supply at Mount Kenneth Place on June 25th. Insp John Murphy said the State was objecting to bail for several reasons . "We are objecting on a number of grounds - the gravity of the charges, the fact that the accused is unlikely to stand trial or wait around for trial. He has escaped from custody on two previous occasions, once in this jurisdiction and once in another jurisdiction."

Judge Michael Reilly remanded Mr Scanlan in custody until Wednesday July 7th, when he will decide on bail.
