Two goals from striker Fernando Torres enabled Atletico Madrid to come from behind to claim a 2-1 win away to Real Betis and notch their fourth victory in-a-row in the Primera Liga today.

Betis took the lead midway through the first half when Brazilian midfielder Assuncao fired home a trademark fee kick from 20 metres but Torres levelled the game just before the break with an acrobatic flying volley.

The 19-year-old Spanish international then grabbed the winner - his sixth goal in four games - when he blasted in from the penalty spot after strike partner Demis Nikolaidis was brought down in the area.

The win sends Atletico into fifth place on 16 points, one behind Osasuna who missed their chance climb higher when they slipped to a 1-0 defeat away to Villarreal.

Barcelona can overtake both sides, though, if they win at Real Sociedad later tonight.

Real Madrid went top of the table yesterday after Ronaldo steered the reigning champions to a 3-0 win at home to Athletic Bilbao, and Deportivo Coruna were held to a 0-0 draw at lowly Murcia.

Real now lead the table on 23 points from 10 games, one ahead of Deportivo and three ahead of Valencia, who can draw level with the champions if they win their match at Real Mallorca tonight.

At the other end of the table Javier Clemente's job was left on the line after Espanyol slumped to their seventh defeat of the season when they went down 2-0 at home to Real Zaragoza.
