India and Pakistan have blamed each other for artillery fire along the military control line dividing the Kashmir region that killed one woman.

A Pakistani military statement said the Indian army started the firing yesterday along the line of control in the Neelum Valley and Aliabad sectors.

It said more than 10 civilians were wounded and one woman killed in the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir.

But an Indian army spokesman blamed Pakistani troops for starting the artillery duel in the Karnah, Kern and Teetwal sectors. He said Indian troops had retaliated.

Indian police said a teenage girl and her brother were seriously hurt when a Pakistan shell exploded near their house.

Indian Defence Minister Mr George Fernandes told parliament today some of the Pakistani troop formations that had advanced closer to the border had since moved back.

"Pakistani army activities in close proximity to the border are constantly being monitored and a high state of vigilance is being maintained," he said.
