Barcelona's promising young midfielder Mikel Arteta has not signed any deal to join Rangers, according to both the player's agent and the Catalan club.
"Arteta has not signed for Rangers, all we have done is speak with them," his agent Miguel Santos told sports daily Astoday.
Rangers had said on their website that they had a deal to sign the 19-year-old and manager Alex McLeish was said to be delighted to have secured the highly-rated youngster who is on loan at Paris Saint Germain until the end of the season.
But a spokesman for Barcelona said that as far as he was concerned Arteta still belonged to the Catalan club and had not signed a deal to join another side.
"All we know is that Arteta will play at PSG until the end of the season. They then have an option to buy the player which expires at the end of April, but apart from that we know of no other deal."
PSG coach Luis Fernandez also said that it was impossible that the player had signed a deal to join the Scottish side.
"PSG have an option to buy the player, and so it is impossible that Rangers have done a deal to sign him without talking to us," Fernandez was quoted as saying in Ason Tuesday.
"We are very interested in Mikel and we have an option to buy him until the end of April."
